Research of Interests and
Experience:
Professor Luther-Davies undertook his
undergraduate and postgraduate training at the University of
Southampton, U.K. where he was one of the pioneers developing
infra-red optical parametric oscillators. He joined the Australian
National University in 1974 to work on high power solid state lasers
for research into laser produced plasmas and spent more than a decade
in working on the physics of plasmas produced at extreme laser
intensities. More recently his interests have refocussed on nonlinear
optics and he has been involved in photorefractive phenomena; novel
frequency conversion schemes using ultra-short pulses; the use of
spatial solitons for all-optical switching; and in the development of
organic third order nonlinear optical materials.
